A Common Mobility Solution for ATN OSI and Internet Protocol Stacks

The ATN as a global aviation infrastructure provides communications service to different classes of safety and non-safety related users over different air-ground subnetworks. The ATN provides mobility and segregates traffic using the OSI IDRP routing protocol and CLNP packet forwarding protocol. Non-safety related services such as those envisioned for the “Airborne Internet” could be rapidly developed using the Internet “TCP/IP suite of protocols”. To accommodate emerging IP traffic, this paper advocates using the ATN OSI IDRP routing protocol to advertise IP routes and thus provide a common mobility solution.
